Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Hyperpop?

Hyperpop is a vague, largely untapped musical sub-genre and artistic movement characterized by an exaggerated or minimal take on pop music. Common artists affiliated with the label tend to incorporate distinct urban and pop sensibilities, taking elements from hip hop, electronic, and dance styles. It is a style that has grown in popularity over the last decade and was originally developed as a counterpoint to the growing popularity of underground rapper/singer collaborations, such as Kanye West and Lil Wayne. The term was coined by DJ Magazine founder Aaron Spectre after he saw the disjointed yet interconnected quality of many popular rappers’ lyrics and producing.

Due to its minimal, experimental approach to song composition, Hyperpop is not typically identified with any single trait common to other popular musical genres. Often, the genre relies on clever co-ordination of elements to create a highly cohesive composition. These elements include:

PC Music and IDM are the two most common producers of modern, abstract electronica. PC Music is an abbreviation for “party music”, and is generally described as an “experimental electronic music form with a heavy focus on the production of ‘loudness’. Much like the beats and rhythms characteristic of a live show, the tempo of PC Music is unpredictable and highly rhythmic. Most artists involved in the hyperpop microgenre have strong tendencies towards the drum beat, especially when it is featured in a prominent way in the track title. Many artists break traditional instruments and vocal chords in their compositions in order to build tension and build the anticipation of the listener.

Soundcloud is another influential online music platform where many artists involved in the hyperpop micro genre of music perform. In fact, a significant number of artists have become successful solely through the use of soundcloud. The soundcloud is an arrangement of digital files that are quickly organized into a “sound cloud”. This cloud is often used as a tool to increase popularity among music fans and to generate free publicity for new artists. Because sound clouds can be instantly updated, artists can update their profiles, fan pages, and albums very quickly, driving up overall traffic and interest in their music and projects.

Unlike other forms of alternative music, the Hyperpop microgenre is one that has evolved quickly and organically, retaining much of its unique aspects from past eras. One of the main characteristics of this genre is the inclusion of popular songs from the past. Many of these songs, which are often cover versions of classic songs, are remixed by modern artists in order to make the song consistent with its origins. For example, Coldplay’s covers of Old McDonald and Weezer’s cover of Happy Birthday are examples of this phenomena.

Hyperpop artists often combine elements of pop, folk, indie, and country. Because many of the bands in this sub-genre are very young, they often focus on synthesizers and classic instruments to great effect. One great example is Chromeo, who are responsible for much of the new wave appeal of “EDM”. They’ve even covered hits from artists such as Weezer and poppy legend Pink Floyd.

Since it shares some of the characteristics of a miscellaneous musical category, the Hyperpop microgenre has developed a unique set of followers. In fact, many of the artists involved derive a considerable amount of their popularity from their involvement with this highly social media genre. Live performance videos, social media profiles, and photo sharing websites are used as avenues to promote and build hype around upcoming events, albums, or songs. The sheer volume of information available about an artist through this medium tends to create a sense of intrigue surrounding an artist’s work, which is what makes it so interesting to many music enthusiasts. A good playlist can help you stay on top of the latest news by displaying the variety of posts made about a band.

As mentioned previously, Hyperpop is quickly becoming one of the most popular genres of late, with artists such as Weezer and Chromeo making huge names for themselves in this field. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing is that this new genre is an exciting departure from traditional Pop that encourages creativity on all levels. On the flip side, it makes the task of curbing new genre trends like these quite difficult since any large number of participants would significantly reduce the effectiveness of any single promotional strategy. Therefore, while Hyperpop is quickly becoming a major force on the internet, making a strong impact on fan communities, staying on top of new recordings, and influencing sales, artists will need to work carefully to make sure their activities don’t hurt their sales by crossing the line.
